Description

How can you find love when the whole world is watching?

High-flying pediatric surgeon Emily Lawrence is new to Washington DC. Her first week in her new job puts her on a collision course with the most powerful woman in America, President Calvin.

Constance “Connie” Calvin’s first term is proving turbulent thanks to trying to juggle work and life as a widowed single mother to a 12-year-old boy. Running for re-election is imminent, and the critics are gunning for her. Worse, her famed icy cool is in danger of melting in the face of Emily’s passion, commitment, and charm.

Admitting the rising sexual tension between the women is just the start. How can they act on it while in the public glare? Giving into temptation comes with such risk. In a world that lives and dies on opinion polls, what will the country make of them?

A charged, age-gap, lesbian romance that puts the power in power couple.

    This Gets My Vote
Emily is an environmental lobbyist. She is outspoken and believes in her cause. On her first day in a new job, she finds herself in a situation where she calls out the President on national TV. Connie is a mom and a widow, an out bisexual woman oh yeah, she is also the President of the United States! She has pressure from all directions but for some reason, the charming Emily seems to relax her. The attraction is mutual but how does the President of the US even start a relationship in the very public eye. There are so many things that stand in the way and so many decisions to make… Will it be worth the risk? Read this and find out, trust me, its worth the read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story!! It was well written, fun and flirty, sweet and romantic as well as full of lovely drama. I adored watching these two strong and powerful women try to work out things everyone else takes for granted, like going on a date without gun toting security and the ever present press trying to get the latest scoop or getting called to the Sit room because of terrorist attacks… When you throw in a homophobic bigot a$$ (think trump) for an opponent, things can be kinda crazy. Luckily they are up for the challenge. This couple filled me with warm fuzzies and big smiles and even though there were some tense moments, I wholly believed in the story. It was so, so, so good!!!!

Great read! Wish it was a series or I could see more awesome things these characters do as a wonderful power couple!

A WLW book with a female President? Hell yeah!

I was sucked in by the cover, straightaway. You know that advice we hear all the time, “don’t judge a book by its cover?” Pfft! You know we all do it! I admit, I do it too, and I did it this time. Lola Keeley and Ylva had me at the cover.

I was amused by Emily right off. She’s a spitfire with morals and a sense of righteousness a mile wide.
She is definitely someone I want on my side, never mind that she’s fighting for the environment. When she calls out POTUS for being a coward on environmental issues, President Calvin is intrigued by her. They have chemistry from the start, and they share some snappy moments, let me tell you!
The entire time I was reading this book (and it only took me two “sittings” to do so, thanks to being able to read while I cook), I kept thinking that it was like a literary soup made up of three different influences. 1 part “West Wing“, 1 part ‘Madame President‘ by Blaine Cooper & T. Novan, and 1 part something else I could not quite put my finger on.
I didn’t care. I ADORED this story. (Yes, those caps are intentional)

All of the characters lived and breathed, and damn did they drink a lot of wine! There was only one walk-on character I wish we’d seen more of, and that was President Calvin’s mother. There was angst and grief and hope and joy, pine trees and a teenager. There was patriotism and conniving and treachery and obviously political maneuvering that I wish we’d seen a little more of.

In the last few pages of this book, I realized what the missing third influence was on ‘Presidential‘.
“An American President“, starring Michael Douglas and Annette Benning.
This book takes that influential, entertaining and memorable movie, twists it and makes it our own.

‘Presidential‘ is the story I needed now. It reminds us all that there is hope. There is something better than the current administration.
We can reach higher, and until we see one of our own in the White House, we have ‘Presidential’ by Lola Keeley.

Emily Lawrence, a passionate environmental lobbyist cross paths with the first-term president, Constance ‘’Connie’’ Calvin, after an unfortunate turn of events. Quick enough, one meeting turns into more and political promises are at stake.

To be able to make the best review of Presidential, I’ll have to split my review in two different points of view on this book both as valid as the other, because on one hand, I was expecting so much more from the book with its first chapters; but on the second part of the book, I think everything fell into place. So, bear with me through this, as it seems I am one of the few who had some things to say about it.

At first, kudos for having the first American female president on paper. For that alone, this book is worth a read. Add to that the ‘’Age-Gap Romance’’ theme and it’s a recipe for success.

The passion and confidence Emily and Connie share in their day to day life are impressive, yet, I felt like it didn’t quite reach their relationship, which at first, in my opinion, was missing great and bold romance between both characters.

From the moment they met and started speaking to each other, I could feel where the writer was trying to take us, emotionally, torn between unstoppable force meets an immovable object. As they quickly get together, at times, their moments lacked the sparks that we usually get from other Keeley’s books, I could feel their constant battle throughout the novel, but I would still have love to read and feel more chemistry between them.

I was disappointed by the ‘’ date’’ scene, which I think was cut way too short for what it could have provided to the story in the long run. I also found the characters were lacking the dept and research we usually get from Keeley’s books.

But then, as the book progressed, I found the scenes to be more complete. The feelings were more intense and a lot more realistic than in the beginning. It felt amazing that Emily and Connie were sharing more of their personalities and it felt more like the story I was expecting early on. This part is what saved the book and its rating for me.

Presidential is a good read, even with all I mentioned, I had a pleasant time reading. I am left under the general impression that Presidential could’ve been a lengthier novel. Some scenes felt ‘’cut short’’ to allow the second half of the book to be as complete as it is. I felt like many of the scenes I thought were lacking dept, were scenes that had to be reworked on, thus left having a lot less meaning than usually intended. For once, I would like to read the first drafts to compare them.

I’ll give 4.5 for it, since the ending was so beautifully written and saved it all.

I had a lot of fun reading Presidential by Lola Keeley. As soon as I saw her name as the author and the title of the book, I knew I wanted to read this one.

This book reminded me of some of my very favorite uber fan fiction, specifically Madam President by Blayne Cooper and T. Novan. It had the same sort of feel to the story even though there are definite differences. Several other readers have mentioned that it is also kind of a lesbian version of the television show The West Wing and the movie The American President. I can’t comment on those since I haven’t seen the movie or watched much of the t.v show.

I can tell you that this is a very well written novel. I connected with the characters right away which is good since I’m a character reader. Even though the theme is based on U.S. politics, the story is really not too angst-ridden. Considering the author is from the UK, she did an excellent job of writing about U.S. politics and all its many quirks. I can only remember one small oops in one person’s political title. She even has a mini Trump character in the story, but he is a fairly minor character, thank goodness. The romance is lovely, and not too quick, though it isn’t a slow-burn either. It also has several pretty steamy scenes.
I am very glad I was able to read Presidential by Lola Keeley, and if you enjoy a good romance set in a political world, I think you will enjoy it too.

I received an ARC from Ylva Publishing for an honest review.

If you thought dating while famous was hard, try doing it when you’re the president!

Presidential is an age-gap workplace romance, which is surprisingly low on angst. Basically, this is a feelgiod utopia; we can only wish it was real some day!

Emily is an environmental lobbyist, intent on saving the world. She doesn’t usually get in the spotlight, but when she does, practically everyone notices. Connie, the president, is a widow and single mother, and a bit of an ice queen. Her known bisexuality hasn’t been much noted before, but enter Emily – and rumours start to fly.

The characters are great, very human and relatable, and the political bits of the story also seem real – so much deals and compromise and chasing poll results.. this was a gripping one I didn’t want to put down, even though a couple of scenes seemed a bit rushed.

I’ve actually read this novel before, way back, when its name was something different and it was still a bit “raw”. So happy it’s a real novel now; us wlw readers need these stories!

I really enjoyed this book! All the characters were well developed and interesting. The storyline wasn’t too far fetched if you were a single woman who just happened to be the President… Image having to try dating as that has your response to…so what do you do for work?!!.
The chemistry between lead characters Emily and Connie was apparent from the start and I found I couldn’t wait to find out how their story evolved. Definitely worth a read!

Interesting story about the first female US-President
I am a total sucker for f/f novels about a first female US president. The bar was raised very high by the classic „Madam President“ by Blayne Cooper and T. Novan (and of course I was glued to the screen watching Madam Secretary). Presidential by Lola Keeley is a good addition to the growing shelf of books about this very special dream and I loved the read.
The mains: I really liked that Keeley put two equally strong characters on the stage: Emily is not only an accomplished professional in her own right, she has a strong and relevant back-story. Emily is a strong female lead and vulnerable too. Constance Calvin is a strong president and despite being a politician she has a strong moral compass. I liked the conflicts which come up when you have to bargain to get a specific agenda done. The president comes with her own vulnerabilities. She is a widow with a teenage son. I thought esp. the transition from being a widow, having child and starting to date was very realistic and well done. The President is bisexual – easy to forget for voters when you were married to a man and have a child. It makes for an interesting twist when she starts dating a woman. A whole new ballgame for the first female President.
The cast: The secondary characters are well done as well, the cast is very diverse in many dimensions (although at some point there was a barrage of mentioning the „skin” in different ways).
The story: The story is a slow burn made interesting by the personalities and the demanding jobs of both main characters: The slow development suits the setting and lends the story a realistic touch. The „conflict“ was well done and resolved.

Thanks Ylva for the ARC. The review is left voluntarily.

The depth of the characters, the zinging one liners (great balance between humorous and heartrending), the romance, and the realistic political details are all wrapped together in this delightful novel. I was impressed with how the author handled the ethical issues facing the two protagonists. I deeply appreciated her ability to support and promote the LGBTQ+ community. I highly recommend this novel, but be forewarned; once you start it, prepare for a late night finish!

Thank you, Ms. Keeley, for all the work that went into publishing this novel—I think Aaron Sorkin would approve. I look forward to reading more.
