Book one in The Cushing-Nevada Chronicles

Author: Georgette Kaplan

Description

Easy Nevada is a mercenary drawn to the secrets of a dangerous pyramid, with a distractingly cute archaeologist at her side and a religious zealot on their tail. This lesbian romantic-suspense adventure is slow burn, fast action, and high stakes.

Easy Nevada is a fortune hunter with an eye on a pyramid buried for two thousand years. She’ll do anything to get her hands on its untold riches, if she can just get past the deadly traps that protect them.
Candice Cushing is a woman of color archaeologist born in Sudan and raised in Britain, who is drawn to the mysterious pyramid that she sees as a piece of her heritage.
Farouq Al-Jabbar doesn’t see it as either history or treasure. The zealot has come to destroy anything that smells of blasphemy, and anyone who gets in his way.
As the stakes ratchet up amid the burning, shifting sands in this wild adventure, the women fighting for their lives start to wonder if they’re really so different after all…and if that cursed pyramid has been buried for a reason.

I’m a big fan of Lara Croft and Indiana Jones, so I was excited to be chosen to be an ARC reader for this book. I was hoping for plenty of action, and there certainly is! From collapsing pyramid floors to bad guys trying to kill the main characters, an escape down an underground river…there was no end of heart-pounding action! There was sass too, and plenty of it. I quite liked Easy. Her wise-cracking, tough persona made it really hard NOT to like her.
    But…

While we were shown why Easy Nevada does what she does, and given a glimpse of one of her secrets, another major secret was never explained. (I can’t tell you what it is, lest I reveal too much of the plot). In comparison, Candice was not as fully fleshed out. We have no real sense of who she is, why she is the way she is or her past. Unfortunately, she ended up being rather flat for me. Toward the end, she was given morals and courage, which was great, but I never connected with her because she was never really fleshed out. A couple of secondary characters have stories of their own, I’m sure. But they were only alluded to and never explained either. They’re important secondary characters, so I wanted to know more about them. Why is that one sick? What does he have that prompts such mothering by Candice at the beginning of the book? We never find out.

It’s an engaging story, and Ms. Kaplan writes really great action scenes that leave her reader out of breath. But the deal-breaker for me is the end of the story, which isn’t the end at all. If you want to know how Easy and Candice’s story ends, you have to buy the next book. I would have understood if they embark on another adventure at the end of this one, but they don’t. The story just…ends. Unresolved.
I read this one in two or three sittings, it’s that engaging. And I would have loved to have given it five stars. But too many unanswered questions and undeveloped characters left me with a bit of a sour taste at the end.
Bummer, because I wanted to really love this book.

Easy Nevada and the Pyramid’s Curse is an action packed adventure novel worthy of comparison to Indiana Jones and Lara Croft. The excitement begins on the first page and does not let up until the very last of the book.
The story begins with Easy Nevada, a treasure hunter in search of a two thousand year old relic to add to her employer’s collection. She has already found twelve of the relics and at the beginning of the book finds the information she needs to hunt for the thirteenth and most valuable of the collection. This information leads Easy to an archaeological dig in the Sudan where she meets the lead archaeologist Candice Cushing, who has just uncovered a two thousand year old and long buried pyramid. The adventure and action explodes when these two characters come together and just never stops for the rest of the book.
The characters in the book are definitely memorable and worthy of this type of adventure novel. Easy Nevada is smart, witty, sarcastic, irritating, and has to have the last word. She is the kind of person you can’t decide if you want to hug or strangle. Candice Cushing is the serious archaeologist who is determined to find what treasures she can for her home country of Sudan even though she was raised in England. In a way, her character was a bit bland to me, at least at the beginning of the book. She does gain more complexity toward the end, and I look forward to seeing how her character evolves in the next book. There are also several bad guys in the book. Some you meet and some stay in the background only to be heard through the other characters.
I will admit that at the very beginning of this book, I wondered if I would like it. Some of the actions seemed impossible to me. Then I realized I just needed to suspend reality a bit and I got hooked. I ended up reading the entire book in one day. The adventures were so exciting and so continuous that I actually had to stop reading at certain points and go do something else for a few minutes just to catch my breath.
If you love adventure books, make sure you read this one. I’m glad I did, and I can’t wait for book two.

If you‘re ready for action, you‘ll get it within this book. For me it was a little bit too much of the technical side, maybe it‘s because english is not my native language. So I had to check alot of words. But all this aside, Easy and Candice I couldn‘t figure out. I always felt like there‘s something missing about them. Maybe it gets better in book 2.

What The ****? Where did this come from??
It has everything and yes I mean everything. Fun, adventure, Intrigue, mystery, action…. You want me to go on?

I loved this book in my mind it was an easy 5 stars. Think Indiana Jones meets Lara Croft. Once it started it just never stopped.

I’m now gonna be a little picky. The British character!!! come on… you’ve put us back 20 years in the come back department. We have comebacks and we have a sense of humor. The American character was kind off brash and was totally opposite to our James Bond. But both characters did make me laugh and yes there is some tension between the two.

I loved it. I’m sure you’ll love it too. Enjoy!!
